What Happens at an Aesthetics Consultation? A First-Timer's Guide

Thinking about a treatment but nervous about the first appointment? Here's exactly what happens at an aesthetics consultation — and what should never happen at one.

The hardest part of any aesthetic treatment isn't the treatment. It's walking through the door the first time, not quite knowing what you're walking into.

So here's exactly what happens at a consultation at Broadway Retreat — and, just as usefully, what shouldn't happen at a consultation anywhere.

What a consultation actually is

A consultation is a conversation, not a commitment. You sit down with a practitioner, tell them what's been bothering you — a line, a hollow, sagging skin, hair you're tired of shaving, a mole you'd rather not have — and they examine the area properly and tell you what's actually going on.

Then you get options. Not one option presented as the only answer — options, with an honest account of what each will achieve, what it involves, how long it lasts, and what it won't do.

The questions we'll ask you

Expect questions like these, because the answers change the advice:

  • What would you like to change? In your own words. "I look tired even when I'm not" is a perfectly good answer — often a more useful one than naming a treatment.
  • Your medical history. Some treatments aren't suitable with certain conditions or medications. A clinic that doesn't ask isn't being relaxed; it's being careless.
  • What you're expecting. If what you're picturing isn't what a treatment can deliver, the right moment to hear that is before anything happens, not after.

The questions you should ask us

Ask them anywhere you go — a good clinic is glad to hear every one:

  • Who will actually perform my treatment, and what are their qualifications?
  • What brand or system do you use, and why that one? (We'll happily talk you through why we use Juvéderm®, Obagi, elōs and the rest.)
  • What happens if I'm not suitable? The honest answer, sometimes, is "this treatment isn't right for you" — and you should hear it said plainly.
  • What does aftercare look like?

What should never happen

A consultation should never feel like a sales appointment. You should never be pressured to book on the spot, never feel silly for asking questions, and never leave without understanding what was recommended and why. If a treatment won't help you, the clinic should say so — at Broadway Retreat, we do, and we'll tell you what would help instead, even when that answer is "nothing, your skin is doing fine."

What happens afterwards

You go home and think about it. That's the correct next step, and no good clinic minds it. If you decide to go ahead, we book your treatment. If you don't, you've lost nothing and learned a lot about your own face.

Every treatment we offer — from a thirty-minute facial to the surgical suite — begins exactly this way.

Ready when you are: arrange your consultation, or browse every treatment first if you'd rather arrive with a shortlist.
