The weight comes off everywhere you asked it to, you look in the mirror rather pleased with yourself, and there it still is: the fold under your chin, exactly where you left it. If that's how it has gone for you, nothing has gone wrong with your dieting, and the reason is genuinely worth knowing.
Why the fat under your chin is the last to go
You don't get to choose where your body spends its fat. That's the whole of it, and almost nobody says it out loud.
When you eat a little less and move a little more, your body makes up the shortfall by drawing on fat from all over you, and the order it draws in was settled long before you started. Think about how you spend money. The loose change goes first, then the notes in your wallet, and the account you've been quietly protecting for years is the very last thing you'd touch. Your body keeps its savings in much the same way, and for plenty of people the pocket under the chin is the account it defends longest.
So the area isn't stubborn because you've been doing it wrong. It's stubborn because it sits near the back of a queue you didn't write. And it's why chin exercises get nowhere: there's no such thing as spending fat from one chosen spot, so they're just exercise, perfectly pleasant, and no instruction whatsoever to your body about which account to raid.
Sometimes it was never fat in the first place
Then there's the version of this that has nothing to do with weight at all, and a lot of people carry it around as though it were evidence of something.
Some faces have that soft line under the jaw at every weight they have ever been. It's how the face is built underneath, inherited in exactly the way a nose or a jaw or a height is inherited, and you'll usually find it in the family photographs if you go looking. It says nothing at all about how you eat or how hard you train.
Which brings us to the useful part. There are really only three things that create that fold: fat, skin, or the shape of the jaw underneath it. A good many people have two of the three going on at once, and there's nothing unusual about that. Which one you're actually looking at decides which treatment will do anything for you at all, and it's worth settling before you go hunting for fat-dissolving injections near you, because those injections answer exactly one of the three. It's why non-surgical double chin removal transforms one person's profile and does nothing whatsoever for the next.
What fat-dissolving injections do for a double chin
They dissolve fat, and nothing else, which is precisely why they're so good at this particular job.
Aqualyx® is injected straight into the pocket, where it breaks the fat cells down so your body can clear them away through its normal functions. We've written the fuller picture in what Aqualyx dissolves and what it doesn't, so here we'll stay with what it means for this one area.
And what it means is this: the injection goes exactly where you point it. That's the difference from dieting in a single sentence. Dieting doesn't take requests, and this does, which is why a localised pocket that has ignored years of good behaviour will finally answer to something. The double chin is one of the areas we treat this way, alongside the upper arms, the waist and hips, the knees and the thighs.
A couple of honest things to know before you picture the result. It's a course rather than a single visit: most people need around three to five appointments at four-week intervals, so the change arrives across a few months. And eating well and keeping active through that course is essential to how it turns out, because what the treatment is doing is finishing a shape you're already looking after. What it will never be is a way to lose weight. We say so at every consultation, because the people who love their result are the ones who knew what it was for.
When the fold is skin rather than fat
Here's where the honest answer changes completely.
Skin loosens over the years, because the collagen and elastin that kept it firm gradually go. When that's what's happening under your chin, the whole jawline tends to look softer and less defined rather than showing one distinct pocket, and the line from chin to neck quietly loses its edge.
Fat-dissolving injections have nothing to work on there. They dissolve fat, so where fat isn't what's making the shape, dissolving it changes nothing, and we'd far rather tell you that than take your money for it.
Loose skin wants lifting or firming instead. A thread lift is often the answer, and the lower jaw is one of the areas it's built for: fine sutures lift the tissue there and then, and your own collagen maintains the lift as they dissolve. Skin tightening does a different job again: it firms the skin itself, where a thread lift repositions it. Which of the two suits you is a judgement we'd make with your skin in front of us. Where the skin has genuinely moved beyond what either can hold, that's a conversation for our surgical suite, where a neck lift removes the excess skin and tightens the structure underneath to restore a clean line from jaw to collar.
When the chin itself is sitting too far back
This one catches people out more than any other, and it's rather satisfying once you can see it.
The chin sets the balance of the whole lower face. When it sits back rather than projecting forward, the run from lip to neck is shallow and soft, and the eye reads that softness as a double chin even when there's very little there to remove.
Think of a tent. Wherever the pole is short the canvas hangs slack, and you could tug and smooth it all afternoon without improving it one bit. Raise the pole and the whole thing pulls taut by itself. Your chin is the pole for everything beneath it.
So people who arrive asking about double chin injections occasionally need the opposite of removal: something added, at the front. Non-surgical chin augmentation uses Juvéderm® filler to improve the size and shape of the chin, and because that changes how the whole lower face sits together, it can bring definition to a jaw and neck that no amount of fat removal was ever going to reach. The change is visible immediately, and the final shape settles over the following two to three weeks.
There's a good deal more to that idea than fits here, because the chin also decides how the rest of your profile reads, your nose included. Our piece on jawline filler and chin filler picks that up properly.
How we tell the three apart
From the front, in a bathroom mirror, all three look much the same, which is exactly why the mirror has never given you a straight answer.
In profile they look nothing alike, and that's most of the assessment right there. At your consultation we look at the area properly and tell you which of the three you're dealing with: whether there's a genuine pocket, and whether it's the kind Aqualyx® is designed for, or whether skin or the shape of your jaw is doing the talking. If two of them are in play, which happens often, we'll say so, and explain what order to take them in.
Which is where it helps that we can do all three at our CQC-registered clinic on Broadway in Manchester, along with the surgery that sits behind them: the injections for fat, the lifting and firming treatments for skin, chin filler for the shape underneath, and a surgeon when none of those three will reach it. Every treatment is delivered by medical professionals, and since we can do whichever one is true for your face, we've no reason at all to steer you toward the wrong one.
Come and find out which one you're looking at
Bring the thing that's been bothering you to a consultation and we'll settle it properly: what's actually making that fold, what would genuinely change it, and what wouldn't be worth your time. If the injections are the answer, the fat reduction treatment page has the fuller picture, and nothing goes ahead until you've decided.
Plenty of people arrive certain that the answer is to lose a bit more weight. Very often it's the one answer that was never going to work, and there's a real relief in finding that out.
