If you've been reading up on skin boosters, you've probably hit the same snag everyone hits: they go in through a fine needle, exactly the way a filler does, and yet everybody insists they aren't fillers. That's the confusing part, and it's worth clearing up, because once you can see the difference you'll know straight away whether a booster is what your skin has been asking for.
Why skin boosters get mistaken for fillers
A filler is placed. It goes into one particular spot, it stays in that spot, and it holds a shape there: a cheek that has flattened, a lip that has thinned, a fold that has settled in. Staying put is its whole talent.
A booster does something else entirely with the same needle. It goes into the skin itself and spreads through it, so instead of holding a shape it improves the material. Nothing about your face gets propped up or pushed out; your skin is simply given what it needs to work better.
Picture a plant that's looking sorry for itself. You can tie it to a cane and hold it in the shape you want it to keep, and that's a filler. Or you can water it, and that's a booster. One decides the shape, the other looks after the plant, and you can probably already feel which of the two your skin wants.
The part that surprises people
Skin booster is a category, not one particular product, and clinics fill that category in different ways. The booster we do at Broadway Retreat is platelet-rich plasma, and what goes into the syringe is the bit that stops people mid-sentence: it's your own blood.
Here's how that works, and why it makes such good sense. We take a small sample of your blood and separate the platelet-rich plasma from it, then re-introduce that plasma into your skin through micro-injections. Platelets are the cells your body sends whenever something needs mending, so they arrive carrying the chemical instructions for repair. Put those instructions into skin that isn't injured and they still get read: the growth factors your platelets release call your skin's collagen-producing cells into action, and the new collagen plumps and smooths from underneath.
You may have heard it called the vampire facial. It's a brilliant name for getting your attention, and a slightly unfair one, because the appointment itself is a very calm thing to sit through.
What a skin booster genuinely gives you
The honest way to describe the result is quality rather than shape. Dull skin gets its light back. Texture evens out, tone looks healthier, fine lines soften, and the skin feels springier, because there's more collagen in it than there was, and collagen is what keeps skin firm.
It's also wonderful on the areas people forget about until a photograph reminds them. As well as the face we treat the neck, the jawline, the chest and décolleté, the hands and arms, and yes, the knees. Skin in those places is thinner than the skin on your face, it catches just as much sun, and it gets a fraction of the care, which is exactly why it tends to age ahead of the rest of you and exactly why treating it makes such a visible difference.
Dark circles and under-eye puffiness respond too, which is usually a happy surprise. And if your skin simply looks tired and flat, that's exactly the complaint a booster answers.
Why a skin booster works to its own timetable
This is the other place a booster behaves nothing like a filler, and it's the bit worth knowing before you book.
A filler shows you the answer the moment it goes in, because the gel itself is the result. A booster shows you an answer your own body makes, and your body works at its own pace. Collagen takes weeks to build, so the change arrives gradually and carries on arriving after you've gone home.
That's why a booster is a rhythm rather than a single appointment, and why we set that rhythm with you at your consultation instead of quoting a number down the phone. How many sessions, and how far apart, depends on your skin and on what you'd like changed, and neither of those is something anyone can honestly guess before looking at your face.
What it will never do
It firms skin, so slackness does improve. What it won't do is lift, and it won't fill. We'd far rather say that plainly now than have you book hoping for either.
If what bothers you is a hollow that sits there even when your face is completely still, that's lost volume, and volume is a job for dermal fillers. If what bothers you is skin that has genuinely dropped, a jawline that has lost its definition or cheeks sitting lower than they used to, that's a lifting conversation, and a thread lift or the surgical route is where it belongs. A booster changes the condition of your skin. The shape of your face is a different job with different tools.
Plenty of people end up wanting both, and there's nothing at all wrong with that. The useful thing is knowing which treatment answers which complaint, because then both of them get answered properly.
Who tends to love it
The pattern is pretty consistent. People who like their face and don't want it altered, but who catch themselves in the mirror looking tired when they feel perfectly fine. People whose neck or hands have started ageing ahead of the rest of them. And people who like the idea that the active ingredient is their own.
There's one more group worth mentioning, because it surprises almost everyone: the same treatment works on thinning hair. Those growth factors stimulate struggling follicles towards fuller, thicker growth, so we use platelet-rich plasma for male and female pattern hair loss, alopecia and hormonal thinning as well as for skin.
Come and find out what your skin actually needs
Bring the thing that's been bothering you to a consultation and we'll look at it properly: what your skin is doing, whether a booster is the honest answer for it, and what would serve you better if it isn't. Every treatment at Broadway Retreat is delivered by experienced medical professionals at a CQC-registered clinic, and nothing goes ahead until you've decided. The platelet-rich plasma treatment page has the fuller picture if you'd like to read it first.
There's something quietly satisfying about a treatment whose main ingredient you already own. All we do is take it to where it's needed.
