Thread Lift vs Facelift: How to Know Which One You Actually Need

A thread lift redefines sagging contours without surgery. A facelift goes further, for skin that has moved beyond what threads can hold. Here's how we honestly decide between them.

Somewhere in your late forties or fifties, the mirror starts doing something new: the jawline softens, the cheeks sit a little lower, and no cream in the world seems to talk it back up. The question we hear at that point, almost word for word every time, is this one: "Do I need a facelift, or is there something less drastic?"

Well, the honest answer is that it depends on how far things have moved, and we offer both, which means we have no reason to steer you toward the wrong one. Here's how the decision actually works.

What a thread lift really does

A Silhouette Soft® thread lift works through a double action, and the double part is why people love it.

First, fine anchoring sutures are placed under the skin and used to lift the sagging tissue there and then. Your practitioner reshapes the contour of the face in the appointment itself, so you see the change immediately. Second, over the following months, those threads stimulate your own collagen. The threads themselves naturally dissolve, and the collagen they leave behind maintains the lift.

Think of it like staking a young tree: the stake holds the shape at first, and by the time it's gone, the tree holds the shape by itself.

The threads suit the lower jaw, the cheeks and cheekbones, the eyebrows and the neck. And if you're wondering about the material, the main ingredient is poly-L-lactic acid, which has been used in surgical medicine for more than forty years; Silhouette Soft® is approved by the MHRA here in the UK and the FDA in the United States.

What a facelift does that threads can't

A facelift is surgery, and surgery can do the one thing threads cannot: it lifts and repositions the deeper tissues of the face and removes excess skin entirely.

That matters because sagging comes in degrees. Threads lift tissue that still has somewhere to go. When skin has moved well beyond that, when there's genuinely more of it than the face needs, holding it up isn't enough, and that's the point where a facelift becomes the honest recommendation rather than the dramatic one.

Because Broadway Retreat is a CQC-registered clinic, our surgical suite sits under the same roof as our non-surgical treatments. The surgeon examines your face, listens to what you want to change, and tells you plainly whether a facelift, a thread lift, or something else entirely will serve you best.

So which one are you?

Here's the pattern we see at consultations, and it's a useful mirror to hold up.

If your face still looks like you and the change you want is "lifted, fresher, more awake," you're probably in thread lift territory, and you'd walk out of one appointment with the contour already changed. If what bothers you is loose skin itself, skin you can gather with your fingers and wish gone, that's the conversation to have with the surgeon.

And if you're not sure? That is exactly what the consultation is for. It costs you a conversation, we tell you what will genuinely achieve the change you're after, and nothing goes ahead until you decide. Arrange your consultation and bring the question with you; it's one of our favourites to answer.
