Skin Tightening Treatment: The Three Different Things It Can Mean

Three different jobs share the one word tightening, which is why the answers you get never quite agree. Here's what non-surgical skin tightening actually firms, and how to tell which of the three your skin is asking for.

Pinch the skin on the back of your hand, lift it a little, and let it go. That small snap back is the thing every skin tightening treatment is talking about, and it's also the reason the phrase ends up meaning three completely different things to three different people.

The three different things people mean by skin tightening

There's a reason the answers you've been getting never quite line up with one another, and it isn't that anybody has been cagey with you. Three separate jobs are wearing the same word, and they have almost nothing to do with each other.

The first is firming the skin itself, which means improving the material so that it holds its own shape better than it has been. Nothing gets moved, nothing gets taken away, and the skin you already have becomes firmer. That's the job skin tightening is built for, and it's what the rest of this article is about.

The second is repositioning it. The skin is perfectly good; it's simply sitting lower than it used to, so what it needs is to be lifted and held where it belongs. That's a thread lift, where fine sutures lift the sagging tissue there and then, and your own collagen carries on holding the lift after the threads dissolve.

The third is removing it, and it's the honest answer more often than people expect. Where there is genuinely more skin than the face needs, firming it changes little and holding it up isn't enough, so the excess has to come away. That belongs to our surgical suite, where a facelift lifts and repositions the deeper tissues and removes the excess skin, and a neck lift does the same thing along the run from jaw to collar. If you're weighing that one up already, how we decide between threads and surgery goes through it properly.

Three jobs, one word, and the word is the part that helps you least.

What firming the skin itself actually does

Three things keep your skin sitting the way it does. Collagen keeps it firm, elastin keeps it springy, and hyaluronic acid keeps it hydrated. Age gradually takes all three, and skin starts to sit a little more loosely than it used to.

Now, that word springy is the one to hold on to, because springiness is exactly what your hand showed you thirty seconds ago.

So think about the cuff of a favourite jumper. When it was new, that cuff gripped your wrist and pinged straight back every single time you shoved the sleeve up your arm. Years on, the same cuff hangs wide and slack around your wrist, and here's the part worth noticing: no wool went missing. Every stitch that was there on the day you bought it is still there. What left was the spring in the knit, and once the spring has gone, a cuff has no way of holding its own shape, so it simply sits at whatever shape it was last pushed into.

That's the whole difference between skin that has gone slack and skin that has dropped. A slack cuff isn't in the wrong place at all. It's exactly where it should be, holding nothing.

And here is where you have an enormous advantage over the jumper, because a jumper is finished. Nothing in it is being made any more, so a stretched cuff stays stretched for the rest of its life. Your skin is alive, and firming treatments work on that living material rather than on where it happens to be sitting. Improving the stuff your skin is made of is a whole family of work, and what microneedling actually does to your skin is where we've written about that most closely, if you'd like to see how one treatment goes about asking skin to rebuild.

Why sun-damaged skin is on the list

Skin tightening at Broadway Retreat is aimed at three things, and the first two are the ones you'd guess: skin that has lost its firmness, and the fine lines and wrinkles that settle in alongside. The third catches people out. These treatments also undo some of what years of sun exposure leave behind.

Which brings us straight back to fabric, because sunlight does much the same thing to both of you. You've seen what years in a bright window do to a curtain. The side facing the glass fades first, and it goes thin and tired long before the side facing the room, even though it is the very same cloth. The sun didn't work on the surface you can see. It worked away at the fibres holding the whole thing together.

Your face has spent its entire life standing at that window. So have your hands, your chest and your neckline, which is why those areas so often tell the story a step ahead of the rest of you.

Why we won't name the method before we've seen your skin

If you came here hoping to be handed the name of one machine, we're going to disappoint you slightly, and we'd far rather do that than choose your treatment before we've looked at your skin.

We use several different methods and products to firm skin, reduce lines and soften sun damage, and which one suits you, or which combination of them, depends entirely on your skin. So the method gets chosen after we've looked at you, never before, which is the only order that makes any sense when skin varies as enormously as it does from one person to the next.

There's a quiet benefit in that arrangement, and it's yours rather than ours. Because we have several methods rather than one, we have nothing riding on which of them you end up having. We're not looking for a use for something. We're looking for the thing your skin is actually asking for, and those are two very different errands.

What a skin tightening treatment actually involves

The consultation comes first, and it carries more of the weight here than it does almost anywhere else, because it's the appointment where the method is decided. We assess your skin properly and recommend the approach, or the combination, that will firm it best for you.

Then the treatment goes ahead with the method we agreed on, planned around your skin.

And then we keep looking. We review how you're getting on and adjust the plan as your results develop, which matters a great deal, because this is the sort of change that arrives gradually rather than appearing all at once.

One thing worth saying plainly, because it's the question we're asked most: none of this is surgery. These treatments firm and refresh the skin without anything invasive, which is what people are really after when they go looking for non-surgical skin tightening: the result, without the recovery. Every treatment is delivered by experienced medical professionals at our CQC-registered clinic on Broadway in Manchester.

The one that isn't tightening at all

There's a fourth possibility, and we'd be doing you no favours by leaving it out.

Sometimes the skin is perfectly firm and sitting exactly where it should, and what has actually gone is volume from underneath it. A cheek that has quietly emptied lets everything below it settle lower, and from across a room that reads as looseness even though the skin itself is behaving impeccably. Firming that skin would change very little, because firmness was never the thing that left. We gave that idea a piece of its own in why facial ageing starts higher than you think, and it's worth your time if what you've noticed is in the middle of your face.

Volume and firmness often go at the same time, and when they do, the answer is usually a bit of each. Which of them is doing the most in your face is one of the first things we look at.

Which of the three is yours

Here's the encouraging thing, and it's why we're not remotely bothered by people arriving unsure: these three look almost identical and feel completely different.

Gather a little skin along your jaw between two fingers. If there's a real fold of it there that you wish would go, that's a conversation about lifting or removing. If there isn't much to gather, and what bothers you is that your skin looks tired and crepey and less firm than it was a few years ago, then firming is your conversation, and it's the one this whole article has been about. If the softness sits under your chin specifically, what actually shifts a double chin is the one to read, because that particular area has three possible culprits of its own.

And if you come away with two answers rather than one, you're in good company, and it makes no difference to what happens next.

Arrange your consultation and we'll settle it properly: which of the three you're actually looking at, which method your skin calls for if firming turns out to be the answer, and what we'd honestly expect it to change for you. Nothing goes ahead until you've decided, and if firming isn't what your face needs, we'll tell you so and tell you what is.

An old jumper never does get its spring back, and that's precisely where the comparison stops. Your skin is made of something still alive, and that is the whole reason there is anything to talk about.
